Carburo y Metalurgia S.A. is founded by Antonio Gianoli and George Mustakis.
Ciro Gianoli and Constantino Mustakis, sons of the founders of Carburo y Metalurgia S.A., started planning how to add value to molybdenum produced in Chile; in order to do so, they installed the first roasting furnace which will then be owned by Molymet.
The company was founded upon the division of Carburo y Metalurgia S.A., taking its business activity consisting in the production and sale of molybdenum oxide, ferromolybdenum and byproducts.
Molymet started its globalization process thanks to the acquisition of a plant in Mexico which gave rise to Molymex.
Molymet debuted in the European production market by acquiring Molymet Germany, the plant where metallic molybdenum is mainly elaborated.
Molymet acquired 100% of the shares of Sadaci (Belgium), thus increasing its roasting capacity by 30%.
Molynor S.A. Industrial Complex was founded in Mejillones, thus constituting the second industrial facility of the company in Chile.
Molynor started operating. Molymet also acquired 50% of the Company Luoyang Hi-Tech Molybdenum & Tungsten Material Co. Ltd. in China this year in order to elaborate molybdenum metal components.
Molymet’s corporate building, which was planned, designed and built following “green building” guidelines and principles, includes every technological element required for an effective energy control and low impact on the environment. The company’s corporate building was awarded the Platinum LEED Certification (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design), the most challenging certification on environmental issues, land the first obtained in Chile and South America.
The expansion process of the Belgian subsidiary Sadaci was completed, thus increasing the group’s production capacity of molybdenum Oxide to 207 MM pounds.
The project to build new plant to elaborate Pure Products in Sadaci was launched, with a foreseen investment of USD 44 million. This plant was aimed at producing products with a higher added value and at providing more flexibility to the processing of molybdenum concentrates to our customers.
The modernization project applicable to MolymetNos’s gas cleaning system was approved, with an investment of USD 50 million. The aim of this project was voluntarily reducing MolymetNos’s sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions.
