First steps

Carburo y Metalurgia S.A. is founded by Antonio Gianoli and George Mustakis.

First roasting furnace

Ciro Gianoli and Constantino Mustakis, sons of the founders of Carburo y Metalurgia S.A., started planning how to add value to molybdenum produced in Chile; in order to do so, they installed the first roasting furnace which will then be owned by Molymet.

Molymet is founded

The company was founded upon the division of Carburo y Metalurgia S.A., taking its business activity consisting in the production and sale of molybdenum oxide, ferromolybdenum and byproducts.

Molymet went international

Molymet started its globalization process thanks to the acquisition of a plant in Mexico which gave rise to Molymex.

Molymet’s first foray into Europe

Molymet debuted in the European production market by acquiring Molymet Germany, the plant where metallic molybdenum is mainly elaborated.

Expanding the boundaries in Europe

Molymet acquired 100% of the shares of Sadaci (Belgium), thus increasing its roasting capacity by 30%.

One single north

Molynor S.A. Industrial Complex was founded in Mejillones, thus constituting the second industrial facility of the company in Chile.

Molynor’s commissioning

Molynor started operating. Molymet also acquired 50% of the Company Luoyang Hi-Tech Molybdenum & Tungsten Material Co. Ltd. in China this year in order to elaborate molybdenum metal components.

Molymet’s corporate building, a sustainability referent

Molymet’s corporate building, which was planned, designed and built following “green building” guidelines and principles, includes every technological element required for an effective energy control and low impact on the environment. The company’s corporate building was awarded the Platinum LEED Certification (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design), the most challenging certification on environmental issues, land the first obtained in Chile and South America.

Increasing Sadaci Roasting Capacity (Belgium)

The expansion process of the Belgian subsidiary Sadaci was completed, thus increasing the group’s production capacity of molybdenum Oxide to 207 MM pounds.

Pure products (Belgium)

The project to build new plant to elaborate Pure Products in Sadaci was launched, with a foreseen investment of USD 44 million. This plant was aimed at producing products with a higher added value and at providing more flexibility to the processing of molybdenum concentrates to our customers.

At the environmental and sustainability forefront

The modernization project applicable to MolymetNos’s gas cleaning system was approved, with an investment of USD 50 million. The aim of this project was voluntarily reducing MolymetNos’s sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions.

Molymet unifies operating brands worldwide

In 2020, the Molymet brand was consolidated worldwide, whose process meant changing the names of our subsidiaries in Belgium and Germany, renaming them Molymet Belgium and Molymet Germany.

2021 Molymet allocates 123 hectares in San Bernardo to environmental conservation

Through a Real Right of Environmental Conservation, Molymet allocates 123 hectares of land for its preservation, which make up a cordon and green lung in the urban area of Nos, in San Bernardo.

Start of Modernization MolymetNos

Project to renew the gas cleaning system of the subsidiary MolymetNos, considering the importance of environmental issues associated with sustainable development, the increase in neighboring urbanizations, and our external stakeholders.
