In the last three years, and as part of our commitment to sustainable innovation, our Market Development team, together with our R&D team, have been working on the development of a Rhenium-based catalyst for use in electrolyzers, which is essential in the production of Green Hydrogen (H2V).
In this context, this initiative allows us to reduce our Carbon Footprint and lower costs, since conventional electrolyzers use a Platinum-based catalyst, a metal that is 30 times more expensive and has a CO2eq emission, that is, 170 times higher than that of Rhenium.
With this, our main objective is to optimize this formulation and expand our product portfolio, in line with our Sustainability goals (Agenda 2030) and the growing demand for H2V, being key in the global plan of worldwide decarbonization by 2050.
Molymet, taking advantage of this context and also taking advantage of the electrochemical properties of rhenium, has developed a plan to be able to synthesize a rhenium-based catalyst for the H2V industry. This year we have been in contact with several institutions (companies and universities) that have presented their proposals for collaboration.
Due to this, and thanks to the collaboration with the University of Alberta (Canada), and its advanced materials research group (NRGMATs), we have successfully tested the first Rhenium catalyst, which will be tested soon in pilot scale electrolyzers.
As the ultimate goal for the development of this catalyst, Molymet is aiming for the highest added value, and to continue advancing and collaborating to build a more sustainable future.
